ther the F1 or F2 buttons so
that external amplifiers can
easily be turned on or off.
It‘s a practical feature that,
for example, would allow the
user to quickly turn the built-
in amplifier in the R&S EFL-
Z100 antenna on or off.
This would be important
if, for example, you want to
switch between the aircraft
band and the LTE band or if
you just want to conserve
battery power.
FRAMEBEEP
function
When thewaterfall diagram
has been completely regen-
erated, an audio tone sounds
so that the user doesn‘t need
tokeepaneyeon thedisplay.
The waterfall diagram that
in leakage mode is displayed
underneath the spectrum,
consists of 190 lines that re-
fresh in an upward direction.
The audio tone soundswhen-
ever all 190 lines have been
refreshed.
Although this function is
actually quite simple, it‘s un-
believably useful. You only
need to glance at the dis-
playwhenever the audio tone
sounds; you won‘t miss any
details of themeasurement.
Improved
AudioTone
Acoustics
The audio tone was im-
proved in the new firmware.
It acoustically adapts to the
signal level and is generated
faster aswell as in a pleasant
tone.
In theEnd
Rohde & Schwarz put a lot
of work into this firmware
update that offers not only
improvements to existing
functions but entirely new
functions as well.
These improvements are
based on user input; the
programmers didn‘t just im-
prove what they themselves
thought made sense, they
implemented functions that
came back as the result of
field tests. And that‘s exactly
what you would expect from
a market leader of profes-
sional HF signal analyzers:
research and development
so that additional innovative
products can be offered.
8. Doubleclicking theEFLDriver opens
thePropertiespage.
9. Open thePort Settings taband click the
Advancedbutton.
10. Awindowopens, whereyoucan
actually configurewhichCOMport you
want touse. Sometimes, especially if you
haveaBluetooth controller installed,many
possibleCOMportsmay alreadybe inuse
andconflicts can arise. Simplyselect an
unusedCOMport for theR&SEFL210 and
youare set.
11.We are ready to start theupgrade
process. Just start theupdate software.
12. Thereareonly fewoptions available:
youcanselect of the tool shoulddetect the
COMport automaticallyormanually.
13. If youselectManual, awindowopens,
where you can specify the correct COM
port of theR&SEFL210. Thiscanspeedup
things, as the tool doesnot have tosearch
withinall existingCOMports.
14. Because I know that theR&SEFL210 is
onCOM25, I selected it.
15. Just a little test: I tried toupgrade
without turning theR&SEFL210on.
Naturally the tool complains about this.
16. Next test: the tool doesnot allow
theupgrade, if the instrument isnot
connected to the external power supply.
This is toprevent power failuredue to
dischargedbatteries.
17. All set this time.
18. This time I set thedetectionmode
to automatic. Theupgrade tool starts
searching theR&SEFL210under COM1…
19.…and reachingCOM25…
20.…the instrument is found. Tomake
sure youhave the time for theupgrade,
youareasked if you can spareabout 22
minutes. This is a serious andwelcoming
information. Certainlymany readers
can relate, when I remember one time
I had to leave theoffice inahurry and
shuttingdown the laptop,Windows started
installingupdated, which tookalmost an
hour. Had I only known…
21. Another nice featureof theupgrade
tool is the fact that you arecontinuously
informedabout theprogress. Knowing
that afirmwareupgrade isadelicate
procedure, nobodywants to sit 20minutes
waitingwithout any feedback!
22. And after approximately 15-20minutes, a
green checkmark signaled that thefirmware
hasbeencorrectly installed.
23. DidRohde&Schwarz payattention to
details?Yes theydid! Youcannot install the
wrongfirmwarebymistake. Here I tried to
upgrademyR&SEFL210with theR&SEFL110
firmware. Upon connectionof the instrument,
theupgrade tool refused todo so.
